A personal memoir by James Bradley

Who am I allowed to become?

Identity, ambition and the life we give ourselves permission to build.

What if the life you're good at is only part of the life you want?

James Bradley built a successful career, moved across the world and became someone others could rely on.

Yet ambitions he had carried for years kept waiting for a more suitable time — or someone more entitled to pursue them.

Who Am I Allowed to Become? is his candid exploration of identity, responsibility and learning to make room for a fuller life.

Kindle, paperback and hardcover editions

What if there's more of you waiting to emerge?

You can spend years becoming good at the life you've built.

You can fulfil expectations, take responsibility, achieve things and become someone other people depend upon.

And still carry ambitions that seem to belong to another version of yourself.

Perhaps the difficulty isn't knowing what you want.
Perhaps it's believing you're allowed to want it.

A life built around expectations.
And the ambitions that kept returning.

From growing up in Australia and coming out as a teenager to building a successful career and moving across the world, James Bradley became accustomed to achievement, responsibility and meeting expectations.

But alongside the life he was building were other ambitions.

Writing.
Bodybuilding.
Travel.
The possibility of living differently.

For years, some of those ambitions felt better suited to other people — or to a future moment when circumstances might finally be right.

Through overwork, a sabbatical and a gradual reconsideration of what mattered, James began to challenge those assumptions.

This memoir follows that process.

Not as a story of abandoning everything he had built, but of discovering how more of who he already was could belong in his life.

The question isn't always what to do next.

Sometimes it's who you're giving yourself permission to become.

Through personal experiences and reflection, the book explores the beliefs, expectations and decisions that shape the lives we build.

The identities we learn to inhabit

How expectations, achievement and responsibility can influence the person we believe we should be.

The ambitions we postpone

Why meaningful interests and long-held dreams can remain unexplored even when they matter to us.

Making room for more of yourself

How reinvention can involve bringing different parts of your identity together rather than discarding the life you've already built.

“Repeated postponement was still a decision, even when I avoided calling it one.”
